We are twinned with a Methodist church in Aveiro, Portugal, just 60km south of Porto. Since 1997 we have shared prayers and songs in our respective acts of worship as well as exchange visits.
Methodism reached Aveiro in 1935, though the church itself was not opened until 1950 and the worship area with its beautiful stained glass was extensively refurbished in 1997. The building consists of the worship area downstairs and a meeting hall upstairs.
The traditions of the church may well remind you of British Methodism; they worship in a similar style to ours, have local preachers and even bring and buy stalls and a church tea when we were there in 2004. Worship is conducted in Portuguese and a number of local customs give Portuguese Methodism its own unique style.
The congregation is of a similar size to Southdown.

We are now celebrating over 10 years of being twinned with the Methodist Church in Aviero Portugual.

Aveiro is famous for its canals and traditional boats used for gathering seaweed.
